Maestro Ilayaraja and A. R. Rahman on Padma Bhushan

The Padma Awards 2010 have been announced and three living legends from Tamil Nadu - Mr. Ilayaraja (Padma Bhushan) and Mr. A. R. Rahman (Padma Bhushan) and Mridangam Maestro Umayalapuram Mr. K. Sivaraman (Padma Vibhushan) bags the same all in the Category of Arts. Congratulations to all who have won.

The reason for this post is, I read and heard the press statement of Mr. A. R. Rahman and a video clip of Mr. Ilayaraja on their take on receiving one of the country's prestigious Awards. Mr. Ilayaraja expressed his happiness and when asked about Mr. A. R. Rahman getting the same he says "If he gets the award it is for him" and because he said this statement, he had to continue saying the same for other people. What is he going to lose if he says he is happy about everybody getting the award? I respect both Mr. Ilayaraja and Mr. A. R. Rahman for their music. I am definitely one of those Mr. Ilayaraja's Fanatic. My respect for him as a person goes off with his attitude on appreciating others. A person who is much younger but great in stature is able to appreciate whole heartedly that he is happy about Mr.Ilayaraja winning the Padma Award. I am not able to understand why can't Mr. Ilayaraja say this one word that he feels HAPPY about it!

I am still a fanatic of Mr. Ilayaraja for his music, however, as a person i am quite disappointed by his attitude! This is just my opinion and ofcourse who cares about my opinion on Mr.Ilayaraja:-(

A word of appreciation could mean a lot to an individual. Leave this case of Mr.Ilayaraja not appreciating Mr. Rahman, in our own lives, if you are appreciated for something that you deserve you feel happy about it and that definitely instigates you to do more good work.

Be verbal in acknowledging your appreciation

Loved your Post, especially the importance of verbal appreciation part, which is soo true.. Most do the criticizing part so aloud and underplay the appreciation part so much..which shld be other way around!!

May be it's too late to comment on your article, but I completely disagree with your opinion on Ilayaraja's attitude. He is how a person should be.

Pardon my arrogance or ignorance or whatever but you think like a child. It's not as simple as artist appreciating other artists, it's much much greater than that.

The scenario is like this:
1) Media always asks Ilayaraja about
AR Rahman as if they are in a war.

2) Ilayaraja is a person who defied traditions who brought a fundamental change to how music is done in South India but have you seen AR Rahman appreciating Ilayaraja's music in his careeer?
When asked AR Rahman to comment on IR, AR says that IR is a religious person, that's all.

3) IR is the person who always acts on his own principals. That is the reason people call him arrogant, head weight what not. I don't see any person who would reject a movie based on Periyar.
obviously, people can't digest that gutsy nature of IR.

4) Also, if you see, when asked about IR's padma bhushan, AR has used an analogy of IR is a family. But what idiotic people won't realize is that IR has used the exact analogy on AR during latter's Oscar's felicitation ceremony.

5) IR knows how AR composes and manipulates music - it may be one of the reason why IR is not in much 'awe' of AR Rahman but he is in awe of a farmer singing effortlessly during his work.

On a personal note, AR Rahman's music tells me what it's like to be AR Rahman but Ilayaraja's music tells me what it's like to be a human.

Ref: Mr/Ms. Anonymous,
It is my blog, i have the right to post my own thoughts. It is my opinion just on the attitude and not on the music. I am not here to argue A. R. Rahman is the best. It is your opinion you have commented and likewise it is my opinion on the attitude part of both the musicians.
I think you have no right to comment on my thought(I am referring to the comment - "You think like a child" here) . I can accept the feedback of my post be it from anyone, but, not if i do not agree with you. Yes Mr. Anonymous, i do not agree with your comment on CHILDISH THOUGHT. Opinion differs and i never commented on your opinion on both the musicians. I still stand by what i have written in my post.

Hi... I m a big fan of Mr.rehman .. I accept rehman is next to mr.illaiyaraja.. Both hav their outstanding talents in different style... Both are legends in their way.. But the point now i want to sketch out is what is the standard of music now?... I m sorry to say this now the music is losing its originallity and standard.. Mr.Rehman comes after mr.raja generation.. He lift the music to another western level.. But now the music directors just copying songs from western albums even background also from hollywood movies.. From bharatiyar style isaiyum mella saagum... Its time to find next ultimate talent of music... With tears.... An indian...

Hi All,

Many of you does not know much about ARR, how arrogant he is?. All are disappeared in front of his music (extra bass..............).

The technology revolution in music made him alive (as we know 2.1… 5.1…, 7.1… DTS, Dolby) otherwise ARR is nothing in front of IR. ARR is good business man and he know how to market his music……

When, K.BALACHANDAR, MANIRATHNAM, BARATHIRAJA lost their confident on them, they want to make money with the ARR’s fancy music. Do you know all of them are nowhere in cinema industry? MANIRATHNAM is struggling.

Be realistic…Try to understand why ARR got Oscar. By giving award to IR, the award committee has strengthened the value of that award.

Accepting this award itself proves that IR is not an arrogant personality.

@^^^ lol.. u got to be kidding me to say, "Accepting this award itself proves that IR is not an arrogant personality."

the problem with greatly talented people is that they presume they are bigger than the art itself. You for one, seem to presume IR is bigger than the Music itself.

Music is bigger than IR or ARR or any other person for that matter, and if he can't appreciate the value of an award by comparing his worth with anyone else who got the same award, the problem is with him. Maybe he should give himself an award named after himself (Maybe even that won't be enough for IR)

'Speak Modesty and IR in the same sentence, I will kill myself.'

Ilayaraja is a very humble person by nature. I know he won't appreciate anyone, He won't gossip at back and at the same time He refuse and dislike if anyone praise Him too. Moreover, He never condemn any song in his life time even it's sound rubbish. This is the most important thing that you and I cannot do. Untill now He is telling He hasn't achieved anything as we aware that He holds world guinness record and has created No 1. Symphony. He is the KING of Music and God of Music!! Be Proud of Him, Indians !!

Thats right IR deserves his arrogance, his attitude is like neither gossiping at the others back nor flattering others(great attitude),but openly discouraged rahman and colleagues sivamani several times...IR mind is full of poison...but IR is right at his work and why should he be a slave to others?
IR talents are gods gifted and he realizd himself well too, a man of simplicity and he has the rights to de ermine his way of living activities...i didn't find anything wrong in his violent communication and other charges in this material world,IR deserves what he does as he is candid, frank and open from his thoughts...

It's true, Rajah is becoming arrogant and egoistic...look at Rahman, how composed and rounded he is even though he is very much younger. If music makes a man more refined, humanistic and loving others...then why is Rajah showing such unfriendly attitude!!
